New German foreign minister renews EU, NATO commitments on first trip

Germany’s new foreign minister, Annalena Baerbock, used her first trip in office to reaffirm Berlin’s commitment to European unity and Franco-German friendship on Thursday. Europe is the “linchpin of German foreign policy,” the Green party politician said alongside her French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian during her inaugural visit to Paris. “For this, a strong Europe needs a strong Franco-German impetus.” Despite the warm tones, environmentalist Baerbock also warned France that Berlin would continue to oppose French plans to categorize electricity generated by nuclear power as “green energy….
